Team of the Week

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE UNDER 13’S – TEAM OF THE WEEK

Under 13 Federation Cup Preliminary Round.

We travelled to Adelaide Uni for our prelim match with a few injuries & just 11 players.
Playford started brightly, doing much of the attacking while dealing comfortably with any opposition attacks. As has been the case for most of the season our final ball let us down & in the final minutes of the first half we got caught on the counter attack and went to half time down by one.
The lads jumped out of the blocks at the beginning of the 2nd half with Malakai causing all sorts of trouble for the opposition down the left wing, until he got crunched in a tackle and had to come off injured. Playford was now down to 10 men. Worse was to come when we conceded a cheap goal against the run of play, 2-0 down.

We then went to a back 3 of Ajiek, Cooper, & Beau who covered the back assuredly from then on. Playford were then awarded a free kick just outside the box, Royce stepping up with a fine effort into the top corner. 2-1.
The boys continued to push hitting the woodwork twice before Liam with just a few minutes to go let one rip from outside the box and again into the top corner. 2-2
We were off to Extra time – the boys were exhausted but ready for battle.

Extra time continued in much the same way as the second half with the midfield of Jed, Liam, Ayii, & Royce working tirelessly to keep Uni on the back foot, while Frankie and Jayden caused plenty of headaches for opposition defenders. Despite hitting the woodwork two more times we were unable to break the deadlock and now penalties would decide the result.
Uni went first and converted – Jed followed up with a neat finish. 1-1
Uni’s next effort was comfortably saved by Mabil, then Liam stepped up to place his shot in the corner. 1-2
Uni’s 3rd shot just got past Mabil with Royce coming forward with another great finish to keep us in front. 2-3
Uni’s 4th penalty was brilliantly saved by Mabil at full stretch. Ajiek confidently placed his shot in the net to send us through to the next round.
Well done boys.

Congratulations to the Under 16’s!

With our first two games postponed due to weather and lots of confusion over start times we could be excused for having a tentative start to the season, but the players weren’t making any excuses. Our first game against Croydon was a midweek game under lights which saw us go behind very early in the game. To their credit the players never looked back, equalising with a well taken penalty by Ben. With two replies from Croydon and a great strike by Jiela on his weaker foot, we went into the half time break 3-2 down. After the break, leading by example, the Captain Josh stepped up with a sublime effort from well outside the box which saw the opposition keeper left in no man’s land. The team then went on to dominate for the next twenty minutes with Croydon unable to get near the ball as we showed some great passing skills. Unfortunately we were unable to find the back of the net again with the match ending 3-3. A well-earned point and a great start against a worthy opposition.

Sunday saw us travel to Mt Barker with an early 8:45 kickoff. Once again the players showed some great skill and dominated in the first half with Mt Barker camped in their own half for at least thirty of the first 40 minutes. This saw the team go into the break 3-1 up with two more goals for Jiela and a great debut goal for Ryan. Although we had many chances in the second half, the players got the job done holding onto that score for the rest of the game. A job well done.

As the coach, I must say I am very happy with the way the team has progressed so far this season. I have seen some great commitment from the players and a genuine willingness to listen and learn. The most pleasing thing for me is that we are only two games into the season and we are playing some fantastic football. The team will only get better as the season progresses so I think we are in for a great ride. I must also mention the great job I think the parents and guardians are doing. Their support and commitment to the team has been great since day one of preseason training.

Keep up the good work boys and let’s make this a season to remember.
